My recent works explore the juxtaposition of the grotesque and the beautiful; they simulate the delicate peeling away of skin, the transformation of organs, the combination of suffering and beauty. She recently had an exhibition titled A Symbolic Decline in Bali, Indonesia, and has participated in several group shows in the United States, including theTransporter project with an art movement called The Center for Tactical Magic. Although originally from Malaysia, Avelire has lived in several cities across South-East Asia and the United States. A suspended, modern-day mandala, A Gnostic Cycle was constructed from a mix of steel, human hair, eggs, ladybirds, thorns and other miscellaneous materials. It is a visual commentary on the youth of the Western world today searching for alternative methods, such as drugs, in order to fulfill the process of gnostic inner illumination/individuation. "Progression. We have become obsessed with the advancement of mankind, with becoming the civilised, rational individual. From the Enlightenment Period onwards, objectivity and scientific proof have become the cornerstones of the educated world today. Any traces of the 'primitive' are denied; suggestions of the supernatural and religion have become taboo. However, man is, by nature, irrational. According to Carl Jung's theories, symbolic rituals contribute to a stable psyche. This extreme focus on progression ironically hinders individual growth.
